Our decks take a beating from everyday use and the changing weather conditions. Therefore, they require regular maintenance, no matter what type of wood is used. Check out these top things to check in your deck!
1. Keep the Wood Healthy
The wood material should be the primary concern when checking your deck. After all, it is what the deck is made of. So, take a good look if there are decaying or split boards. Inspect for cracks through the use of a flat screwdriver. Insert the head of the tool in the cracks. More than 1/4 inch indicates bad condition. If the wood is already spongy, it could indicate rot. Always keep an eye on uninvited insect, which could mean infestation.
2. Check the Connecting Ledgers
A ledger board is a piece of lumber that safely connects the deck to your home. So, making sure that it is installed correctly should be a top priority. It should be attached through galvanized-steel log screws and not nails. Check for widened gaps between the ledge and your house because it could indicate loosening, which can compromise the strength of the structure. Make sure that the flashing is intact, without debris or dirt stuck between the spaces. Our deck and siding experts can help you with this.
3. Safer Railings and Balusters
Check the balusters and railings if they are tightly in place. Wriggle each to check their integrity. Make sure that they are properly placed – 3 feet high for railings and 4 inches apart for balusters. Put back or replace loose nails. Apply extra glue if needed.
Prevention is always better than cure. Proper inspection can save you a ton of money in the long run. You should be able to spot imperfections in your deck before they worsen.
